Description
The study of global processes suffers from a lack of systematic, quantitative descriptions of controlling land surface characteristics. Appropriate, thorough, and scale-consistent geographic descriptions of the land surface serve as a bridge from small-area,
in situ
process knowledge to the integrated parameters of global models. Research is being carried out on the following: (1) characterizing land surfaces using remote sensing, digital cartographic, and other data; (2) integrating these data into models; and (3) evaluating their effects using advanced scientific visualization techniques. Specific efforts focus on combining remotely sensed and
in situ
measurements to estimate carbon flux in the Pacific Northwest, developing land surface characterization parameters for input to hydrologic modeling of surface flows, investigating scaling effects on measurements, modeling urbanization effects on ecosystems, and creating an interactive modeling environment based on advanced scientific visualization technology.
